A birth alarm, also known as a birth sensor, is used for a pregnant mare and ensures that the owner or rider receives a signal in time when the horse starts to go into labor.
The system consists of a transmitter and receiver. The transmitter is attached to an anti-roll girth that is placed on the horse's withers and reacts when the horse lies down in the birthing position. The birthing position in a horse is characterized by the mare lying completely on her flanks. This is a position in which the mare can better absorb the contractions.
With the Birth Alarm Lite from the Gallagher brand, the mobile phone is the receiver. This only requires a pre-paid SIM card. It is important that you have a signal with your mobile phone. If you receive an alarm on your mobile phone, you should not answer it. You call back the number of the SIM card in the transmitter. Then let the phone ring twice and then disconnect. In this way, the Birth Alarm is reset to standby mode.
We also have the Birth Alarm Smart in our range. This is a reliable birth alarm and can be attached to the bottom of the halter or to the anti-roll girth.

Instructions for use of the GSM Birth Alarm rental
Step 1: The battery
Before you can start using the Birth Alarm, you must first install the battery. Loosen the 2 wing nuts on the front of the transmitter housing. Insert the supplied 9V battery and press it firmly onto the battery contact clamp to ensure good contact. Then tighten the wing nuts again and make sure that the gasket on the cover is properly positioned. When correctly mounted, the transmitter is now splash-proof. After approximately 5 minutes, the Birth Alarm is ready for use. There is no on/off button on the transmitter. The transmitter with battery is always on standby. Before you start using the transmitter, we advise you to test the system.
Step 2: Checking the system operation
The Birth Alarm is equipped with an automatic battery check.
If you remove the girth with transmitter from the horse's back and hold the transmitter vertically, the red light will either burn continuously for +/- 10 seconds (and then start flashing!). This means the battery is OK.
Or start flashing immediately. In the latter case, the battery is bad and should be replaced immediately.
If the battery is completely empty or if no battery is installed, nothing will light up.
Based on the red LED light, 3 important phases can be distinguished when the transmitter is held in a vertical position, namely:
Red LED light starts flashing at normal rate immediately after testing = bad battery
Red LED starts flashing very fast = poor reception
Red LED light keeps flashing for one minute and then repeats the program = SIM card not OK (e.g. not programmed properly)
Step 3: Transmitter setting
On the back of the Birth-alarm transmitter is a black rubber button and a red LED light. When you press the button briefly, the light will flash 1 or 3 times.
If the light flashes once, the Birth alarm is set for normally resting mares (standing). The alarm will go off when the mare lies down.
If the light flashes 3 times, the Birth alarm is set to the position for horizontally resting mares (lying down). The alarm will sound if the mare, from her completely flat lying position, raises her neck and head.
To change mode: Press the rubber button for +/- 4 seconds until the red light goes out. To check which mode the Birth alarm is set to, press the rubber button briefly and count how many times the light lights up.
Step 4: Confirming the girth
Make sure the girth is secure. A hole looser than a normally saddled horse. If the girth is too loose, it can happen that when the mare lies against the wall, the girth Stirrup partially turns off the mare's withers. As a result, the alarm will not go off.
Step 5: The alarm
One mobile phone (+ charger) is included. The alarm will go off on this phone when the foal is about to be born. The Birth alarm will then call the mobile phone. When the alarm goes off, you must dismiss the call using the “end call/red receiver” button.
To turn the alarm off, you must call the Birth-Alarm back using the mobile phone provided. If you let the call ring 2-4 times, the system is turned off and reset.
