Clipping is especially important in autumn and winter for horses that are ridden regularly. Their thick winter coats make it difficult for them to lose heat and they stay wet for a long time after work. But when is clipping necessary, how do you do it safely, and what equipment do you need?
Why shave a horse?
Horses develop a winter coat in the fall to protect against the cold and the elements. For horses that are intensively trained, this thick coat can actually be detrimental.
While riding, they lose heat less effectively, sweating and staying wet for a long time. This increases the risk of chills, stiff muscles, and colds. Clipping your horse (partially) helps keep him more comfortable while working.
Benefits of horse shaving:
- Your horse dries faster after riding
- Less chance of cold or skin problems after sweating
- The coat is easier to keep clean and cared for
- A neat, well-groomed appearance
When is the best time to shave?
Most horses are clipped between October and FebruaryThe right time depends on:
- the amount of training
- the thickness of the winter coat
- how quickly your horse sweats
A good sign to clip is when your horse stays wet for a long time after riding and has difficulty drying. Highly trained horses are sometimes clipped several times a winter.
Some horses are sheared once per winter, while sport horses or intensively trained horses are sheared several times per season.
Please note: a clipped horse loses its natural insulation. Therefore, always ensure that matching blanket, tailored to the weather and the degree of shearing.
